Stratotech Time Attack

The #27
- Running steady, having just come off one corner and lining up for the next.

The car from the back
- Here's a picture of the #27 as it pulls down a short straight. I've swapped to some lighter white rims without the hated "tuner" lug nuts. Boy, it is hard to imagine how much extra work some "special" lug nuts can add. You can see the car is actually riding quite high with the large tires. I have a lot of aerodynamic development room left with the car. If I feel like chasing it down, the next stages would be a complete car undertray in thin aluminum sheet, a series of ground effects on the side and inside the fenderwells and a diffuser in back. I should also re-mount the rear wing higher and more solid than the back of the car sheetmetal. The potential work on a race car never ends.

The #27
- in a hard right hand corner. You can see the weight transfer forward and to the left.
I think this is through corner 1 on the track, coming off the front straight at around 70 mph

The cars of the GT race
- Here's a picture of all the cars that started the GT invitational

Here is a short video of the race:

The #27
- A short section of the race where I finally get my head out of my butt and start to push it a bit.

- The last bit of the race as we come off a full cource yellow and catch me napping

May21 2007:
Long time no update. I've turned up the boost to 14 lbs and the car is seriously fast. I can spin the 275's out back a little too easily now, so I'm going to do some thinking on tire options. Here's a few pics of the car:
Enjoy,
-Trent

The #27
- You can see the difference in diameter between the 25.7" tall wheels out back and the 23" tall wheels out front.

The #27 driver's side
- I'm still debating what to run for rims out front. More venting for the brakes would be a big plus, but I really don't want to raise the car any. I think I'm getting to the end of what I can do with the stock fenders. :-(
Dec 06 2006:
Well, it's been a while. Winter is socked in good and the car is going nowhere. I've fitted the Toyo RA-1 P275/40/17 in the rear and I've done two test and tune days at Stratotech motorsports park. The added grip in the rear is awesome. I'm still sorting through options for the upcoming year, but I'll at least have the 275's in the rear. The leading option right now is to go to 17" rims all around and possibly upgrade the front brakes. I'm also planning a move up to a 12 lbs spring in the wastegate. The extra 2 lbs of boost should net me around 30 hp so around 370 to the wheels. I have a good list of fixes and upgrades, but I doubt I'll have time for anything more than an oil change before the start of next season.
Enjoy,
-Trent
July 18 2006:
The first race is on the books. I managed to finish all races, save two. I dusted my front chin spoiler in an off track excursion, which forced me to pit and rip it off the car, which ended my GT race and in the following race in the rain I ran out of fuel. I forgot to fuel up between sessions ;-(. As a whole the car ran very well, but my four year old Toyo RA-1's just don't have enough grip in the rear to put down the power. I've already ordered some 275 40 R17's to put in the rear, keeping the 225 50 R15's up front.
I'm also getting a lot of gear noise from the rear end. We knew the diff was passable, but I think it doesn't have much time left on this world. I'll post pictures when I get a chance. On the positive side, the engine pulled hard at 10 PSI all weekend without missing a beat. The dyno sessions were great and the engine made 341 hp at the wheels at 10 psi and 459 at the wheels at 18 psi. I'm now running a 7 lbs spring with a manual boost controller to bring the boost up to 10 psi.

Apr 20 2006:
After a very short season last year I am now putting the car back together. Last year I swapped up to a 60-1 Hifi turbo. This year I have again changed turbos, this time to an A-Spec racing GT35R kit. The turbo just looks good.
Enjoy,
-Trent

The New engine in
- I've just completed the fuel lines and installed the upper intake.

The revised fuel rails
- I cut the ends off some stock S5 rails and welded on AN-6 fittings. The fuel is now delivered to both rails, as opposed to the primary first, flowing into the secondary. The payoff should be much better fuel delivery to the secondaries.

The new turbo
- Here's the happy new GT-35R Ball bearing turbo. It should really pick up the fun factor.

The new turbo
- Here's A picture of the turbo before I put in the upper intake. At this point I was still planning on using the S4 fuel rails. The change to the S5 rails made for a much cleaner system.
Apr 28 2004:
At this point the car has just become a roller. There still remains a good amount of work before I can drive anywhere, but it feels good to have wheels on the car.
Enjoy,
-Trent

The Next #27 on her own wheels
- And Thar she blows, a shiny Turbo II, rolling on some really ugly stock wheels.

The Next #27 Suspension bolted on
- The Mazdaspeed IT2 suspension kit is on the car. It took a while to press in all the new bushings, but I'm hoping the payoff is a very stiff car..

The Next #27 painted
- The car is painted 2003 Dodge Flame Red (To match the tow vehicle). The next step is bolting all the fun suspension goodies I bought from Mazdaspeed on the car.

The Next #27 painted underside
- This has to be the shiniest turbo II underside I've ever seen. Hopefully no one else ever sees it ;-)

The Next #27 Turbo
- Nothing too crazy here. Just a Big shaft Super-V trim T04B turbo with a P trim turbine wheel.

The finished Doorbars
- These were just so pretty I had to take a picture when I finished them
Feb 10 2004:
The car now has the majority of the roll cage installed. We got a bit tubing happy building the Petty bar system. The two legs braced to the rear mounts should keep the car pretty square as I run around the track.
Enjoy,
-Trent

The Next #27 Cage in #2
- The door bars are in and all I have left is to tie them together and gusset everything in sight. I'd guess we added about 150 lbs in roll cage tubing during the build as the car has now become slightly top heavy in the rotissiere

The Next #27 Cage in
- Most of the cage has gone in. All That's missing is the NASCAR style door bars and the gusseting. I mentioned last update that the rotissiere makes seam welding easier, It makes roll cage welding amazingly easy. When you need to do the bottom of a tube, you roll the car over and stand inside. Beats lying upside down with moltem metal dripping on you.
Jan 23 2004:
New year and a new car in the works. The new #27 is well underway, having recently returned from RMC Industries. After a week sitting in a caustic bath the shell is pretty much bare metal. I've got the car up and mounted on our rotisserie and a good amount of the seam welding is done. I have to say a rotisserie is the only way to do that kind of work on a car. When you need to get at a new spot on the car a quick pull on the car and it rolls to the best position to weld from. Another good day of welding and we are ready to start planning out the roll cage. I may also start the engine build up in the near future (I'm very anxious to try out the Mircotech and the Tilton dual disk clutch setup). Should be an exciting year
Enjoy,
-Trent

The Next #27 Seam welded
- The seam welding is progressing well. Most of the car has been stitched up.

The Next #27 Stripped
- Back from the tank and mounted up on the rotisserie. I'm not sure what the cause of the odd green color is, but a bit of damage to the right rear is now visible. The damage is very minor and a tiny bit of bondo will cover up the minor dents left after the metal work is done. With the car completely stripped I'd hazard a guess we're around 600 lbs at this point.

The Next #27 Starting Point
- A burned up 4 lug base model. It took three good days to strip the car down to get it ready for the Hot Tank. I think there's a bit of work before it looks like the rendering below

The Next #27
- Here's the mockup of the next #27 car. Expect a 270-300 rear wheel horsepower turbocharged bundle of fun for the 2004 IT/GT class.
